Advanced position-based synchronization

Thomson Industries is launching an advanced synchronization option for its smart electric linear actuator, the Electrak HD. This enhanced control option implements position-based synchronization within the integrated actuator electronics. Its application is in sophisticated motion control systems that require dynamic load sharing between multiple Electrak HD units.

"We have worked closely with industrial equipment manufacturers who rely on dynamic and reliable load synchronization and adapted our controllers to their requirements. By incorporating advanced position sensing and communication capabilities, we have been able to greatly simplify the steps for synchronizing multiple actuators. This optimization enables users to achieve greater efficiency, adjustment force, and safety in heavy-duty applications," explains Anders Karlsson, Senior Product Manager for Linear Actuators at Thomson.

The synchronization option supports up to eight Electrak HD actuators, which interact in real time via a CAN bus network for perfectly coordinated operation. A constantly timed signal in each actuator coordinates position sensing in all units. If a higher load is applied to one actuator, it signals the others to slow down to maintain a consistent position. Only a fault (communication or power failure, voltage or temperature overshoot) in one or more actuators causes the entire system to shut down. This real-time communication prevents the piston rods from bending or kinking, thus ensuring maximum system reliability and safety.

Unlike most other position-based actuators, which require space-consuming external control units, the Electrak HD incorporates all synchronization functionality as an integral part of the built-in electronics – true plug & play. Pre-assembled and pre-wired, the actuators can begin synchronous operation immediately after installation.

The Electrak HD offers dynamic load ratings of up to 16 kN, making it a popular solution for applications previously reserved for hydraulic cylinders. Thanks to its enhanced synchronization capabilities, it is particularly suitable for systems that require dynamic load distribution and positioning – not possible with conventional hydraulic cylinders.

This makes the synchronization option advantageous for countless applications involving asymmetric or unstable loads, such as:

  • Work platforms, where the base must be kept level as workers change positions.
  • Automated material handling, where multiple actuators work together to move products smoothly along conveyor belts or onto an automated guided vehicle.
  • Packaging automation, where multiple actuators position items and stack packages.
  • Solar panels, where multiple actuators are responsible for synchronously lifting, lowering, tilting, and collision-protecting heavy loads.

The enhanced synchronization option is now available when ordering Thomson Electrak HD actuators.
