Delta has announced the launch of its new compact and highly efficient ASDA-B3 series servo system, which offers a user-friendly operating environment with precise motion functions, a newly added Safe Torque Off (STO) function, high response sensitivity of up to 3.1 kHz and high positioning accuracy with over 16.7 million pulses per revolution to optimise production efficiency and productivity.

ASDA-B3 can be used in a wide range of applications including machine tools, electronics, semiconductors, industrial robots, printing, packaging, textiles, warehousing and medical. In parallel, the company has launched the new generation ECM-B3 series motor, which offers improved power density, stability and rigidity while reducing the footprint by 40 %. Nevertheless, the maximum torque has increased to 350 % and the maximum speed is now 6000 rpm. With the new ASDASoft GUI, commissioning and troubleshooting time is reduced.

A new level of performance

Among the many performance features of Delta's new 230VAC ASD-B3 servo drive is an auto-tuning function that ensures optimised operation without the need for manual adjustments. Response sensitivity has been significantly increased from 1 kHz of the previous model to 3.1 kHz. Delta has programmed new motor control algorithms and increased the processing power of the drive to achieve this outstanding result.

The 40 % shorter settling time also contributes to higher productivity on the production line. Load tolerances have increased, allowing better control resolution and system stability, as well as a higher response bandwidth under the same load conditions. The low cogging torque, higher speed and lower acceleration and deceleration times also contribute to efficiency. As with previous Delta servo drives, customers can choose from motors with different inertia ranges to achieve the most efficient inertia ratio.

The new drive enables a range of motion functions, for example in PR mode. Operators can use up to 99 PR paths for flexible scheduling of motion commands. The Capture function enables instantaneous acquisition of coordinates using a single digital input.

State-of-the-art safety, communication and control

Safety features include an integrated STO safety function that does not require an additional module (B3A family), achieving a safety integrity level of SIL-2 and a performance level of PLd. The ASDA-B3 series can also operate with different control modes, from traditional pulse trains and analogue inputs to the more current fieldbus systems such as CANopen and EtherCAT. These different control modes have been achieved with three different hardware designs to ensure good segmentation and cost efficiency for each application. The EtherCAT command frequency has been increased to 125 μs / 8 kHz for higher accuracy.

Positioning is now several orders of magnitude more precise thanks to the 24-bit encoder, which delivers 16,777,216 pulses per revolution and 46,603 pulses for a single degree. This absolute encoder retains the motor position even when the power is switched off.

Flexibility, compatibility and improved usability

The new configuration application ASDA-Soft guides the user through a quick and easy setup procedure with the help of wizards. Onboard diagnostics functions and usability have been improved with a new, intuitive layout. The new ASDA-B3 series servo drives are compatible with the existing ASDA-A2 and ASDA-A3 series motors. Configurations with IP20 connectors are available and IP65 connectors are being planned.
