Avoid expensive downtimes

When packaging machines fail, high costs arise. Magnetic couplings from KBK Antriebstechnik reliably protect systems against overload, thus preventing unplanned, costly downtime. The couplings are available in various designs and can be precisely adapted to the application upon request.

KBK magnetic couplings operate without contact and are therefore not subject to wear. The couplings transmit the desired torque consistently and without deviations. Packaging machines with magnetic couplings can also resume operation immediately after the overload is eliminated – this is not possible with systems with mechanical couplings. Unlike these couplings, magnetic couplings do not produce any wear that could impair the operation of packaging systems. Magnetic couplings are quickly and easily integrated into the application using clamping hubs. The overload torque can be conveniently adjusted by changing the immersion depth from the inner to the outer rotor.

KBK manufactures both permanent magnet couplings and hysteresis magnetic couplings – the two designs differ from one another in their operating principle. Hysteresis magnetic couplings smoothly disconnect the power transmission in the event of an overload and are therefore ideal for use in stretch film packaging machines, among others. In these machines, the film must always be kept under tension, otherwise it will tear. If the machine manufacturer uses hysteresis magnetic couplings, the film tension remains constant. KBK hysteresis magnetic couplings are available for torque ranges between 0.1 and 5 Nm.

KBK hysteresis magnetic couplings are available in many different designs. Versions are available, for example, with clamping hub connections on both sides, with laser-etched scales and individually adjustable overload torque, or for applications involving screwing and winding processes.

In contrast to hysteresis magnetic couplings, permanent magnet couplings jerk when an overload occurs. This property is particularly in demand in filling and capping systems for glass bottles: The jerky disconnection of the power transmission ensures that the bottle cap is tightly closed and a perfect seal is achieved. KBK permanent magnet couplings can be used for torques between 1.2 Nm and 60 Nm. Both magnetic coupling types are suitable for speed ranges from 4,000 to 10,000 rpm and are also available in easy-to-clean stainless steel versions. For applications in high-temperature environments, KBK uses special magnets and adhesives upon request. If required, the coupling specialists also support their customers with the design and calculation of torque and overload values.
