Electric motors
Considerable costs saved
By custom-manufacturing an explosion-proof high-voltage motor within just twelve calendar days, Menzel Elektromotoren was able to save a petroleum refinery considerable costs.
The failure of a compressor motor caused enormous financial damage. The team at the German medium-sized company Menzel worked on this project with considerable commitment, including weekend work, and thus completed all the necessary work in record time. A three-phase squirrel cage motor from the MEBKSW series in size 710 that was in stock was designed in Ex protection class Ex ec, increased safety, with a pre-purge device. Menzel's certified explosion protection experts awarded the ATEX marking II 3G Ex ec IIA T3 Gc and prepared the extensive documentation required by the customer within the tight time frame.
The motor delivers an output power of 10 MW and 64132 Nm nominal torque at 6600 V nominal voltage. It meets protection class IP55 and is designed with cooling type IC 81W (air-water heat exchanger) for outdoor installation and the increased ambient temperature range of -20 °C ... 48 °C. Various mechanical processing was also necessary to ensure smooth installation in the existing system environment; Menzel manufactured a base frame and flanges for the pre-purge device and machined the motor shaft.
