Compact all-rounder

The SD4B drive controller from Sieb & Meyer is now also available as a high-current variant. This further expands the application possibilities as a highly dynamic servo amplifier for the operation of rotary and linear low-voltage servo motors or as a frequency converter for high-speed low-voltage synchronous and asynchronous motors.

Despite an increase in the rated current from 10 A to 13 A in the high-current variant, the small construction volume and, above all, the small width of 25 mm could be retained. Despite their compact dimensions, both SD4B variants combine a wide range of functions in their IP20 housing. The drive controllers are not only equipped with the Safe Torque Off (STO) safety function as standard, but also with interfaces for CANopen and Modbus TCP.

A multi-protocol real-time Ethernet interface is available as an option, so that flexible communication with the higher-level control is possible via EtherCAT (CoE), Profinet IO and Powerlink. In addition to the TTL encoder input and output, the user has five digital inputs/outputs and an Ethernet interface for easy parameterization.

In the high-speed range, the SD4B as a frequency converter supports the sensorless operation of synchronous motors up to 240,000 rpm and asynchronous motors up to 360,000 rpm with clock frequencies of up to 32 kHz. In addition, sensor-based control based on TTL encoders is possible. The robust speed control also allows high mass inertia ratios between motor and tool of up to 1:100.

Load indicator included

The SD4B also has an integrated load indicator. This evaluates the torque-generating current of the motor and can thus replace acoustic structure-borne sound sensors. Load changes in the motor are thus determined with great accuracy. This in turn allows conclusions to be drawn about possible tool breakage or tool wear. In addition, the load indicator can be used to detect contact between the tool and the workpiece (“sparking”) and to flexibly adjust machining feed rates.
