ABB has announced the launch of an AMXE250 motor and HES580 converter package specifically for electric buses. The perfectly matched new drive package offers the industry a more efficient, reliable and readily available solution and marks a major step towards cleaner and more sustainable transport options.

The HES580 is the first 3-level converter for electric buses on the market and features excellent energy efficiency and power output. Compared to conventional 2-level converters, it reduces harmonic losses in the motor by up to 75 percent, which minimizes heat dissipation and maximizes energy savings. The key to this performance lies in the innovative 3-level architecture.

Unlike 2-level converters that switch between two voltage levels (DC+ and DC-), the HES580 introduces a third voltage level - the midpoint. This effectively halves the voltage jumps during each switching operation, resulting in reduced harmonics and therefore fewer harmonic losses. As a result, the AMXE250 motor operates with greater efficiency and delivers better performance under a range of operating conditions.

However, the HES580 not only has up to 12 percent lower motor losses than conventional 2-level converters during typical driving cycles, but also optimizes the lifespan and reliability of the AMXE250 motor. By mitigating harmonic effects and minimizing stress on the motor windings, this advanced technology ensures sustainable performance and longevity of the entire electric drive train.

In addition, the AMXE250 is characterized as a compact permanent magnet synchronous motor designed for high-efficiency drives. It offers high torque density for improved dynamic performance and quieter operation for greater passenger comfort. The HES580 and AMXE250 have been specifically designed for flexibility and can be installed further apart from each other, allowing operators to make optimal use of space. Thanks to the easy parameter setting, commissioning and startup capabilities, the package can be quickly installed in the vehicle.

David Segbers, Global Product Manager in ABB's Traction division: "We are very excited to launch the first 3-level converter for electric buses. The motor-converter package is perfectly coordinated and brings significant energy efficiency gains to both operators and original equipment manufacturers."

Fabiana Cavalcante, Global Head of Mobile e-Power at ABB, adds: "The electrification of buses is a big step towards sustainable, clean public transport that improves the quality of life. We are pleased to provide future-proof solutions that help the industry achieve its sustainability and performance goals."
