Extended power range

Extended power range

Sieb & Meyer has expanded the SD2 multi-axis solution with the integrated safety technology in terms of performance. A variant is now available in which the maximum rated current has been increased from 42 Aeff@16 kHz to 80 Aeff@16 kHz. This opens up new areas of application for the multi-axis drive system.

"As is usual in the SD2 product family, the new variant is also available as an air-cooled model," says Torsten Blankenburg, Chief Technology Officer at Sieb & Meyer AG. "In combination with the associated PS2 power supply units, multi-axis solutions with an output of up to 60 kW can be realized." The new variant was originally designed for a manufacturer of grinding machines, who can use it to cover the entire range of grinding spindles in use.

The customer had decided in favor of the SD2 due to various advantages - among others, the reduced wiring effort, the integrated safety functions and the control via Profinet were convincing. In general, the operation of high speeds is crucial in this application. It is also important that the motor only heats up slightly to ensure high quality machining and to keep rotor losses as low as possible. The flexibility of the machine is also relevant: It must be possible to change easily and quickly between different grinding spindles - accordingly, it should be possible to store different motor parameter sets in the drive amplifiers. The multi-axis solution SD2 can meet these and other requirements of grinding applications - and thanks to the new variant now also cover an extended power range.
