With the new MX controller series, Mitsubishi Electric is launching a powerful, compact, all-in-one control platform that combines high-precision motion synchronization, integrated safety functions, and seamless system integration on a single platform – optimized for modern manufacturing processes.

The MELSEC MX-R and MX-F series integrate motion, sequence, and communication control into a single module. Unlike conventional systems with separate control, motion, and network components, the unified architecture enables less wiring, more compact control cabinets, and simplified maintenance. Manufacturers benefit from shorter development times, more stable production processes, and seamless interaction between all components – even in highly dynamic applications.

Flexibly scalable – from 8 to 256 axes

The MX-F and MX-R all-in-one platforms cover a wide range of manufacturing requirements. They control everything from 8 axes in compact systems to 256 axes in large production lines. The MX-F series is particularly suitable for packaging lines, labeling machines, and pick-and-place applications. Space and cost efficiency are the focus here, without compromising on performance. The MX-R model is designed for complex applications such as battery production, semiconductor manufacturing, or precision cutting systems, where precise synchronization of multiple axes is crucial.

Engineering Precision

The MX controller was developed for applications where precision is critical. Its architecture enables ultrafast and high-precision synchronization, tailored to the requirements of demanding manufacturing processes.

Key features include:

  • Synchronization cycles of 0.125 ms for fast and consistent machine coordination.
  • Microsecond timing accuracy with TSN for precise operation across networked devices.
  • Mark detection and knife control with 1 µs precision, ideal for high-speed packaging and semiconductor handling.
  • Different calculation cycles per axis (e.g., 125µs, 500µs, 2ms) for optimal control speeds and tighter manufacturing tolerances.
  • Fast diagnostics in the event of faults

Unexpected faults can occur even in precisely synchronized production lines. In these cases, fast, accurate diagnostics are crucial to minimize downtime. The MX controller automatically saves production data with cycle accuracy, similar to a dashcam. Combined with software and AI support, errors can be quickly analyzed and resolved. This minimizes machine downtime, and sporadic errors can be analyzed and resolved remotely if necessary.

Intelligent integration

The MX controller supports OPCUA, MQTT, and CC-Link IE TSN and can be seamlessly integrated into existing and future systems – including robots, sensors, and control systems. A multi-core CPU and large memory enable real-time control and analysis. Compatibility with the established MELSEC iQ-R and iQ-F modules protects existing investments and allows for incremental upgrades.

Certified Cybersecurity

Certified by TÜV Rheinland according to IEC62443-4-1 and 4-2, the MX controller protects against unauthorized access and cyberattacks. Encrypted communication, user authentication, access control, and secure data storage ensure data security and protect intellectual property.

Strategically favorable timing for the market

The demand for high-performance machine control systems is growing. The MX controller combines high-speed synchronization, integrated functions, and secure connectivity in a single platform – thus reducing system complexity while increasing performance.

Jonas Roski, Product Manager PLC, HMI, Software at Mitsubishi Electric: "Manufacturing processes today increasingly require faster controllers and integrated functions that go beyond the classic PLC. The MX controller combines these requirements in a single platform."
