Taking Dynamics to the Next Level

Taking Dynamics to the Next Level

Small servo drive systems offer compact solutions. Wittenstein Cyber Motor is expanding its cyber dynamic line to include size 60 plus a technical upgrade - providing machines with greater degrees of freedom.

Small servo drive systems meet the needs of numerous machine builders for drive solutions that are compact, high-performance, and flexible all at once. Wittenstein Cyber Motor is therefore specifically expanding its industrial-grade small servo drive system by adding the new size 60 to the cyber dynamic line series of servo motors. At the same time, the entire motor family has received a comprehensive technical upgrade. Both developments provide designers with even greater degrees of freedom and new possibilities for implementing sophisticated, application-specific machine concepts.

The servomotors in the cyber dynamic line are primarily used for decentralizing, electrifying, and miniaturizing motion control applications. This applies to filling and packaging machines as well as dosing and gripping systems, material handling solutions, machine tools, and robotics.

By expanding the motor family to include the new size 60 and upgrading the entire modular system in terms of compactness, robustness, functionality, and certification, Wittenstein Cyber Motor has further advanced the application potential for highly dynamic axes and extremely precise machine kinematics.

For axes with demanding requirements

The brushless servomotors of the cyber dynamic line, housed in a robust, high-quality stainless steel enclosure, are industrial-grade small drives designed for highly dynamic axes and extremely precise movements in machines. With their space-saving, compact design, they are particularly well-suited for motion control applications where installation space is limited and high torque density is essential. The new size with an outer diameter of 60 mm - DL 60 for short—complements the established sizes 17, 22, 32, and 40. It was designed for axes that require even higher performance. The DL 60’s increased torque handles heavier loads - and its improved dynamics enable faster acceleration and braking, resulting in shorter cycle times. At the same time, minimized detent torques and high-resolution encoders ensure smooth, jerk-free motion and precise positioning.

Both “Best-in-Class” and “Perfect Match”

This places the servo motor in the high-performance segment - with an IP54 rating in the standard version. For more demanding operating conditions, the motors are available in stainless steel and hygienic design variants. These two versions of the DL 60 offer what are arguably the highest protection ratings on the market for low-voltage motors of this type: IP66/67 (stainless steel design) and IP69 with IP65 at the output (hygienic design). This makes them “best-in-class” for use in demanding, high-cleaning-frequency, or hygiene-sensitive environments. At the same time, the DL 60 - like the entire product family—impresses with its flexible control interface options. In all versions and sizes, these servo motors form a “perfect match” with the cyber simco drive 2 servo controller from Wittenstein Cyber Motor for equipping drive axes. Alternatively, they can also be combined with servo controllers from other manufacturers. The wide range of sizes and variants of the servomotors, along with the control options for implementing industrial-grade small drive systems, not only offers designers a broader selection but also enables them to more effectively source and implement servomotor-based drive solutions for demanding machine concepts and motion control applications - all from a single source.

Greater Variety of Options

Along with the technical implementation of the DL 60, the technical upgrade of the entire cyber dynamic line further optimized the existing, proven product design. As a result, in addition to the axial cable outlet, a 90° radial cable outlet is now also available as an option in all sizes of the standard variant, enabling space-saving and flexible installation. This makes it easier to address applications with limited installation depth in particular. In addition, a 1- to 2-stage integrated gearbox has recently been introduced for size 60—as is the case in all three variants: Standard, Inox, and Hygienic Design. The additional brake option and new encoder variants are now also available in the standard version of the drive, including size 60. Furthermore, multiturn encoders for distance measurement and position determination over multiple revolutions can be optionally integrated into various sizes.

As part of the upgrade, the cable selection has also been expanded to accommodate drag chain applications or applications with increased torsional loads. Typical examples include multi-axis robots in production and logistics, handling gantries with rotary modules in material handling, and cobots with axis travel units. For these applications, various cable variants with abrasion-resistant, cold-flexible, and chemical-resistant jacket materials are available for different motor sizes. These cables meet the specific requirements of these applications regarding continuous flexural strength, flexural fatigue strength, and torsional strength—features that set servomotors of this type apart in the market. Finally, regulatory requirements in various market regions have also been taken into account. As a result, additional certifications for various sizes of the cyber dynamic line in all variants according to UL and CSA standards now facilitate access to countries and markets where certification is mandatory.

Power Density and Functionality

The small servo drive system was developed for motion control applications in highly dynamic axes and extremely precise machine kinematics, where compactness and power density are critical in demanding industrial environments. Typical applications include:

  • filling processes in which servo-motor-controlled filling valves ensure a flexibly adjustable and precisely controllable fill volume,
  • the handling and positioning of sensitive components with the highest accuracy and precision,
  • automated and process-monitored format and valve adjustment in packaging machines,
  • a wide variety of adhesive application and dispensing processes with high precision requirements for varying discharge rates,
  • integration into servo-electric grippers for pick-and-place kinematics, or
  • use as quiet and smooth-running drives in industrial measurement and testing solutions.

A Future-Proof Design

With the addition of the new size 60 and a comprehensive technical upgrade, the servomotors in the cyber dynamic line series expand the range of solutions for sophisticated machine designs and motion control applications - offering both functionality and power density in a future-proof design.
