Linear systems
Maximum performance in the smallest space
Designers of medical technology and laboratory automation systems often face a common problem: Linear modules for positioning tasks quickly become bulky with stroke lengths exceeding 200 mm, their small spindle diameters result in uneven running, and the use of grease makes them incompatible with stringent hygiene guidelines. Igus has therefore launched the drylin SLW-0620-Ds08. This compact linear module with spindle drive enables smooth-running stroke lengths of up to 300 mm, operates completely lubrication-free, and is PTFE-free and PFAS-tested.
The new miniature linear module, drylin SLW-0620-Ds08, is suitable for integration into automation solutions with limited installation space, such as laboratory robots with movable pipetting heads that automatically pick up, distribute, and deposit samples. The module is only 22 mm high and 32 mm wide. “Many users are looking for compact linear modules that operate quickly and smoothly at both short stroke lengths and well over 200 mm, while also requiring no grease,” says Michael Hornung, Product Manager for drylin linear and drive technology at igus. “Our new, space-saving, and lubrication-free miniature linear module SLW-0620-Ds08 is the answer to this dilemma.” It is available immediately in silver anodized and black anodized finishes.
Up to 300 mm stroke length, service life of 877,000 double strokes
Despite its compact design, the new miniature linear module enables a stroke of up to 300 mm. “Many linear modules on the market are significantly bulkier in this range,” emphasizes Michael Hornung. Another advantage: The new solution allows speeds of up to 200 mm/s. This is made possible by a dryspin high-pitch thread, where the thread pitch is so steep that one revolution corresponds to a pitch of 40 mm. "We opted for a spindle with a slightly larger diameter of 8 mm to ensure rigidity and smooth running at these speeds." The maximum static axial load capacity is 50 N, and the maximum radial load capacity is 200 N. "Laboratory tests have proven that the new linear modules achieve a service life of 877,000 double strokes under a load of 30 N," explains the linear technology expert.
Lubrication-free and successfully PFAS-tested
The drylin SLW-0620-Ds08 linear axis is designed for use even in areas with high hygiene requirements. The system requires no lubricants. The carriage for the attachments moves along the aluminum rail via high-performance plastic sliding bearings. This material incorporates solid lubricants that allow for low-friction dry running without grease, which quickly becomes a contamination risk with conventional metal bearings. "Furthermore, we use iglidur JPF material for all bearing points, which is PTFE-free and PFAS-tested," says Michael Hornung. "Users of the new PTFE-free and PFAS-tested solutions are therefore already prepared for potentially stricter EU regulations. The combination of the SLW miniature axle, dryspin thread technology, and iglidur JPF not only reduces the risk of failure but also meets the growing customer demand for greater sustainability."
