Couplings
For secure torque transmission
Ruland presents couplings featuring D-bores, designed for direct connection to flattened shafts (D-shafts). The D-bore prevents slippage in critical applications, such as drive systems in semiconductor manufacturing, medical devices, or automation systems within factories and warehouses. These couplings are available in beam, elastomer, bellows, and Oldham styles, allowing design engineers to select the coupling type best suited to the specific application requirements.
Couplings with D-bores ensure a secure mechanical connection by engaging directly with the flattened section of a D-shaft. Unlike the use of round bores with set screws – which can loosen or slip on small-diameter shafts – D-bore couplings establish a positive mechanical lock with the shaft, thereby guaranteeing reliable torque transmission. Furthermore, traditional set-screw connections on smaller flattened shafts can often be difficult to install reliably, as the screw may fail to seat properly against the D-profile and could subsequently loosen due to vibration or improper installation.
These couplings are particularly well-suited for shafts with diameters under 7 mm that lack standard keyways. Since no additional shaft machining is required to achieve a positive mechanical lock, D-bore couplings simplify assembly and enhance reliability in compact drive systems.
Ruland D-bore couplings are available with bore diameters ranging from 3 mm to 10 mm and are manufactured from aluminum to ensure low weight and low inertia. Depending on the coupling type, versions featuring either clamp-style or set-screw hubs are available.
The couplings are manufactured at Ruland’s state-of-the-art facility near Boston, utilizing carefully selected North American bar stock and proprietary manufacturing processes. All couplings are RoHS3- and REACH-compliant and comply with regulations regarding conflict minerals.
