The next stage of evolution in drive technology

Nabtesco is driving the evolution of drive technology. Its vision: machines that independently unlock efficiency potential and continuously optimize their performance—enabling smart, self-financing production. As a specialist in precision gearboxes, the company acts as a key innovator in the industry, making a decisive contribution to the realization of "Physical AI" in modern production processes with the introduction of the first space-neutral digital gearbox.

Physical AI describes the fusion of artificial intelligence with real-world physical systems. The goal is to continuously monitor system states, detect deviations, and adapt behavior in real time. Unlike purely digital AI applications, Physical AI must navigate a dynamic and often unpredictable physical environment. Machines, robots, and industrial plants operate under constantly changing conditions—including varying loads, temperatures, friction, vibrations, and wear. Consequently, there is a need for systems capable of reacting flexibly to these changes, interpreting new circumstances, and adjusting their motion and load profiles accordingly. In short: solutions that do not merely execute tasks, but actively think along with the process.

An innovator and driver of physical AI in drive technology

As a leading specialist in precision drives—holding the position of global market leader in robotic gearboxes and innovation leader within the industry—Nabtesco possesses an intimate understanding of these challenges and knows exactly how to navigate the path toward the future of drive technology. The company acts as a catalyst for change, spearheading the development of intelligent, self-optimizing systems. "We aim to contribute to an industrial ecosystem that is increasingly self-optimizing—one that detects errors early, makes maintenance predictable, and continuously evolves through data-driven insights. The ultimate goal is a production environment so resilient, intelligent, and efficient that it effectively finances itself—achieved through minimized downtime costs, reduced energy consumption, and higher, more predictable productivity," states Daniel Obladen, Director of Sales & Marketing at Nabtesco Precision Europe GmbH.

Digital gearbox with complete cpatial compatibility

A central building block of this vision is Nabtesco’s digital gearbox. This space-neutral solution—developed and manufactured in Limburg an der Lahn (at the Ovalo GmbH facility, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nabtesco Group)—enables precise condition assessment during live operation. The gearbox captures parameters such as torque and temperature, analyzes them directly on-board, and thereby paves the way for the adaptive optimization of the drive system. This allows for the targeted improvement of system performance, the real-time calculation of actual gearbox service life, and the early detection of faults. Overloads, unsuitable operating points, and instances of misuse can also be identified. This reduces downtime, prevents damage, and extends service life.

No reliable physical AI without valid data

Modeling physical processes and optimizing system behavior under real-world conditions requires large volumes of data. Crucially, however, quality is paramount. High-quality data is the product of experience, expertise, and a deep understanding of the system. Nabtesco brings this know-how to the table, drawing on decades of practical experience. "We know exactly how our gearboxes behave under load, as they undergo wear, or under the influence of temperature and lubricants. This enables us to accurately interpret measurement values and translate them into actionable information," explains Daniel Obladen. This wealth of experience is complemented by the mechatronics expertise of adcos—a specialized development partner for embedded systems and mechatronic solutions within the corporate group (in which Nabtesco holds a 60% stake).

The future has begun

The development of Physical AI is on a clear trajectory—supported by valid data, robust system models, and tightly integrated components. One thing is certain: Physical AI will not arrive as a single, sudden technological leap, but will instead evolve step-by-step into real-world applications. Nabtesco is playing a pivotal role in driving these innovations forward.
