Safety brakes for extreme torques

Safety brakes for extreme torques

With its new safety brakes in the ROBA-stop S and ROBA-stop M series, Mayr Antriebstechnik is expanding into the braking torque range above 1,000 Nm. These solutions are designed for extreme applications such as port cranes, winches, or lifting systems operating in harsh environmental conditions.

In applications involving high torques and demanding environmental conditions, reliable safety brakes are crucial. Mayr Antriebstechnik is therefore expanding its ROBA-stop S and ROBA-stop M series with new models designed for particularly high braking torques. The XL safety brakes are designed for applications in sectors such as port facilities, offshore technology, and industrial crane systems.

In the maritime environment in particular, saltwater, moisture, and high loads place special demands on braking systems. Applications such as port cranes, lift vessels, anchor winches, or deck winches require solutions that can securely hold loads and reliably absorb high frictional work even in an emergency.

The new ROBA-stop M 2000 expands the series for high torques. As a holding brake, it achieves a braking torque of 3,500 Nm; as a service brake, up to 2,500 Nm. The brake is available in protection classes IP54 and IP66. While IP54 is suitable for standard applications, the enclosed IP66 version offers additional protection for outdoor use, such as on large construction cranes.
For applications with particularly high requirements for corrosion protection and protection against environmental influences, Mayr Antriebstechnik offers the ROBA-stop S. The brake is designed for maritime operating conditions involving seawater and, with a special seawater primer and appropriate coatings, can achieve high corrosion protection classes in accordance with DIN EN ISO 12944. With the new size 11, the series expands its range of applications and achieves a dynamic braking torque of up to 1,200 Nm as standard.

In addition to protection and performance, installation and maintenance also play an important role in applications under difficult conditions. The safety brakes are designed to be easy to install and operate reliably. Wear-resistant friction linings extend maintenance intervals and reduce downtime.

With the ROBA-stop S series, maintenance required due to wear on the friction linings is limited to adjusting the air gap or replacing the rotor with friction linings at the end of their service life. With the new size 11, the rotor is also accessible from the rear of the brake - even when the brake is installed - which facilitates service work under difficult conditions. “We’ve been on the market with our robust motor brakes for quite some time now, even in extreme applications,” says Andreas Merz, product manager at Mayr Antriebstechnik. Due to increasing electrification, electric drives are becoming more compact and more power-dense, but at the same time must be capable of handling higher torques. With the new XL brakes, the company is expanding its product portfolio for applications where few solutions have been available until now.
