7th axis
Expanding the range of applications for cobots
Rodriguez’s collaborative 7th axis, featuring collision detection and a "Freedrive" function, expands the range of applications for cobots.
Greater reach and flexibility for industrial automation
With the Movotrak Cobot Transfer Unit (CTU) from Thomson, Rodriguez offers a collaborative reach extension for cobots for the first time. This solution expands the working area via a mobile 7th axis, enabling a single cobot to operate at multiple stations along a production line. This allows for more flexible production processes and more efficient use of robotic systems.
The CTU supports the flexible deployment of cobots in changing production environments without the need for time-consuming retooling. Cobots can move to various work positions along the track, covering larger areas—such as along machine lines or between processing stations. Depending on the configuration, the operating range can extend up to 10 meters. Thanks to modular mounting options, the system is compatible with many standard cobots available on the market.
Autonomous collision detection
The Movotrak CTU is the only 7th axis on the market equipped with collision detection; it identifies collisions while the carriage is moving and automatically halts motion. This facilitates operation in environments with frequent human-machine interaction. While this feature complements the safety architecture, it does not replace safety functions required by standards.
Greater operational flexibility
The combination of a mobile axis and safety features designed for collaborative use enables:
- Cobot operation at multiple stations
- Reduced retooling times
- Easier adjustment of machine and workstation layouts
- Higher equipment utilization
Flexible mounting options (horizontal, ceiling, or wall mounting) allow for diverse system configurations. Additionally, the CTU features a "Freedrive" function, enabling the robot to be guided manually and positions to be saved directly. Rugged design, versatile applications
The Movotrak CTU is based on two linear units that ensure maximum moment load capacity and rigidity, even when the robot arm is fully extended. Based on these linear units, Rodriguez supplies a complete system—including motor, gearbox, control cabinet, and application-specific configuration. Typical areas of application include:
- Inspection and testing of large components (quality assurance)
- Machine loading
- Material handling (picking, palletizing, packaging)
- Large-scale welding, soldering, grinding, and dispensing
