Comau presents MI.RA/Dexter, a powerful AI algorithm-based software programme that simplifies human-machine interaction while optimising industrial operations.
In keeping with Comau's commitment to simplified automation, MI.RA/Dexter is a metalanguage that makes robotics more accessible to companies of all sizes by translating human language syntax into robot syntax. This allows operators to programme a robotic system using simple and intuitive controls such as looking at an object, touching a specific point in space, listening to speech recognition processes, and reproducing and executing complex sequences of actions. The simplified programming interface also allows the operator to match, adjust and correct the robot's actions in real time, optimising workflow efficiency.
Because MI.RA/Dexter can be used without any special qualification in IT or robotics, customers can reduce or eliminate fixed programming costs. It also helps streamline the creation of complex programmes required to interact with robotic arms and can be used to programme any industrial technology in a smart and straightforward way.

MI.RA/Dexter was recently used by quality controllers to programme a complex robotic cell for the all-electric New Fiat 500. The customer asked Comau to automate the testing and inspection process for the vehicle's infotainment system. These are typically lengthy, repetitive and manual processes with high costs and a significant error rate. Comau's solution combined an NJ-220 robot in its Safe version with a Racer-5 COBOT mounted on its wrist to perform automated inspection operations inside the vehicle, increasing the efficiency, traceability and repeatability of the process.
The collaborative system also helps ensure full compliance with the inspection process by objectively assisting the operator in completing each assigned task. To this end, the system has devices that have 'quasi-human' sensitivity, such as a vision system to validate infotainment apps, a microphone and speaker to recognise voice commands, and a gripper for delicate contact work. Ultimately, the inherent safety features of the 6-axis articulated arm cobot eliminate the need for protective barriers, reducing both the overall footprint and safety costs.
The MI.RA/Dexter programming language enabled operators to autonomously manage the complex robotic system. Activities included safety management of the activities that the collaborative robot had to perform in close contact with the operator, as well as automation and subsequent optimisation of the required inspection tasks. It is part of the Comau MI.RA (Machine Inspection Recognition Archetypes) family, which also includes other digital tools and high-tech vision systems developed for the Smart Factory.
