The right grease can significantly extend the service life of a rolling bearing: long-term studies show that 85% of all rolling bearing failures could be prevented by application-specific lubricants. There are several parameters to consider when choosing the right grease.

Basically, a grease consists of three different components: A mineral oil brings the basic lubricating properties. A thickener increases the viscosity. Finally, various additives prevent corrosion and oxidation or provide wear protection. "Both the chemical structure and the mechanical properties of a lubricant are very complex," says Klaus Findling, Managing Director of Findling Wälzlager GmbH. "Therefore, there are various parameters for classification."

These parameters include the "kinematic viscosity", which is calculated from the lubricant's viscosity and density. It refers exclusively to the mineral oil used and is given as standard for temperatures of 40°C and 100°C. The "dropping point", on the other hand, provides information about the flow behaviour under the influence of temperature. The "full penetration" defines the consistency of the grease in its entirety and is used to determine the so-called NLGI class. Basically, a distinction is made between flow greases, soft greases and hard greases. "However, there are numerous other characteristic values for greases," says Klaus Findling. "We offer our customers professional advice that takes all important properties into consideration." Findling Wälzlager also offers the service of special greasing with special lubricants - flexible and individually tailored to the respective application.
