Electric motors
For applications with high dynamics
ABB has revised its comprehensive range of high power density (HDP) induction motors for dynamic applications. This opens up new opportunities for OEM customers in the machine building industry who require motor and drive solutions with optimal dynamic behavior and high power density. Typical applications for such motors include plastics and rubber extrusion lines, injection molding, winding machines, lifting equipment, conveyor systems, test benches and machine tools.
With the expanded portfolio of HDP motors, ABB can now offer machine builders sizes between 80 and 400, power ratings up to two megawatts, and alternative variants such as water-cooled and high-speed motors. The motors are designed for frequency converter operation; matching packages of motor and frequency converter for all sizes are available.
"ABB is known for its optimized packages of motors and frequency converters that ensure precise motor control and high dynamics for a wide range of variable-speed applications in general industry," said Frank Wesseler, product and marketing manager for IEC low-voltage motors at ABB Motion in Germany. "Thanks to HDP motors, these benefits are now available to machine builders who need the exact performance that high torque, high power density motors provide."
High power density for retrofits and new machine designs
Machine builders can take advantage of the high power density of HDP motors in two ways. They can retrofit an existing machine with a more powerful replacement motor to increase performance, or they can choose a more compact but equally powerful motor when designing a new machine to reduce the footprint of the machine.
Low inertia and high overload capability
HDP motors are designed to provide fast motion control and high dynamic response due to their low inertia and high overload capability. Low inertia motors are ideal for applications that require rapid changes in the direction of rotation, allowing, for example, rapid switching between forward and reverse machine motion.
Easy mounting
When designing the HDP motors, ease of installation was important to ABB. Installing a new HDP motor in an existing machine is therefore possible without much technical effort. ABB has incorporated the concept of simplicity throughout, from easy access to connections to simple installation of accessories such as forced cooling fans, encoders and brakes - whether they are from ABB or other manufacturers.
Customization
The revised HDP series includes all common sizes and technology variants such as water-cooled motors, high-speed motors and motors in the multi-megawatt power range. This allows ABB to meet most machine builders' requirements without extending delivery times. If the standard design does not meet a machine builder's specific requirements, it can be customized as needed.
HDP motors comply with the IEC 60034 standard and are suitable for unrestricted worldwide use. ABB's global service organization provides worldwide technical support to OEM manufacturers and end users.
