Evolution of the Three-level Frequency Converter: SD2M becomes SD4M

SD2M will be updated to SD4M in the course of 2023 providing new opportunities thanks to the SD4x logic platform. Since the power output stage of SD2M is already of the most recent design, the update will only affect the logic board.

The SD4M frequency converters offer further improvements in terms of functionality and control technology. In the long run, the complete performance range known from the series SD2M will also be available with the SD4M devices. The main benefits for the customer will be improved control technology and the Ethernet-based bus systems. The new 32-bit processor is up to five times faster, allowing a higher resolution and more accurate calculations.

The SD4x devices are ready for the future thanks to the multi-protocol chip for the Ethernet-based interfaces established on the market and helpful additional functions such as a real-time clock. Current customers will be able to continue using the SD2M, but for new projects the switch to the SD4M is easy: dimensions and performance data match those of the SD2M devices. Customers must only make some adaptations regarding the logic for the new interfaces.

The SD4M three-level converters can fully show their advantages, for example, in the field of turbo blowers and turbo compressors. On the one hand, these systems benefit from the low motor heating in combination with the high system efficiency. The latter leads to significant energy savings and quick return on investment at 24/7 full-load operation. On the other hand, without motor chokes or sinusoidal filters the overall system has a more compact design and can be produced at lower costs.
