Kollmorgen announces the introduction of its AKMA servo motor, specifically designed for durability, cleanability and versatility. The motor features a hardened, anodized aluminum surface and offers machine designers a cost-effective and hygienic alternative to stainless steel for medium to heavy washdown applications.

The AKMA motor's lightweight design allows for easy installation and maintenance, and its high torque density offers machine builders more power in a smaller footprint. The motor is suitable for precision motion applications in the food and beverage, pharmaceutical and medical packaging industries. With an IP69k rating, the AKMA offers high performance in wet and harsh environments and supports critical applications such as tracking and positioning for antenna base systems.

The anodized aluminum surface provides high resistance to chemicals in a wide pH range. Because the motor's smoother, hardened surface is more scratch resistant and will not peel like a painted motor, it can be used above the food line. The AKMA's stainless steel shaft meets functional safety requirements, while the "one-piece" rounded housing design eliminates the need for a gasket between the flange and housing to prevent puddling and water ingress. The AKMA motor also features a vented design to balance internal and external pressure, increasing OEE and motor life.

"We are pleased to offer the AKMA servo motors to engineers looking for an affordable motor solution for washdown environments where stainless steel surfaces are not necessarily required," said Ross McMillan, vice president of engineering at Kollmorgen. "Now it's possible to strike a balance between performance and value and avoid spending too much money on a surface finish you may not need.
