Electric motors
No Limits...
Menzel Elektromotoren upgraded an in-stock motor for operation at an altitude of 4200 m above sea level and delivered it to a gold mine in the Andes.
Due to the failure of the existing mill motor, time was tight, and the new motor had to be modified to seamlessly replace the old one. The motor's performance data and cooling method were adapted to the high altitude. The cooling system was changed to IC 06 with forced fans. The protection class is IP24W (NEMA: WPII, weatherproof).
Further modifications included switching to double-delta, 4160 V, 60 Hz, shortening the B-end shaft, re-milling the drive shaft, and manufacturing base plates to adapt the foot holes and shaft height to the connection dimensions of the existing motor. In addition, the squirrel-cage motor was designed for start-up with a frequency converter. The motor has a rated power of 2980 kW, a rated speed of 894 rpm, and a rated torque of 31833 Nm.
Menzel won the contract due to its ability to deliver on short notice. The internationally active Berlin-based manufacturer also supplies the mining industry with application-specific motors for fans, conveyors, and other machinery. The current project was arranged through Menzel's Peruvian sales partner, who also traveled with the user to Berlin for the acceptance test and accompanied the commissioning.
