High security standards and cybersecurity for industry
Siemens is setting new standards in industrial drive technology with the introduction of the new Sinamics S220 high-performance drive system. Sinamics S220 builds on the success of Sinamics S120. With the new CU320-3 control unit and software version 6.6, the system is now making a quantum leap into a new performance class. As an integral part of the Siemens Xcelerator portfolio, Sinamics S220 offers a seamless and innovative drive system. Comprehensive simulation and analysis options as well as advanced connectivity functions enable complete integration into digital work processes. The significantly improved system performance gives users a decisive boost in productivity.
As a central element of Sinamics S220, the newly developed CU320-3 control unit sets new standards in drive technology thanks to its unique architecture. With the ability to operate up to 12 axes on a single control unit, the system achieves outstanding integration density. The built-in multicore processor provides the necessary computing power. The Drive-Cliq-Express interface ensures fast data transmission at a speed of 1 Gbit/s. An innovative test pulse method with three voltage sensors per axis enables sensorless control with near-encoder quality – while offering greater energy efficiency and robustness.
Digitalization and future-proofing
Sinamics S220 has been fundamentally redesigned to meet the requirements of digital transformation. The targeted generation of high-quality field data opens up new business models in Industry 4.0. The X128 interface enables high-frequency data transmission for predictive maintenance. Integration into the TIA Portal and virtual commissioning with DriveSim Designer significantly improve the engineering workflow. New wizards and an undo function make operation easier. The Smart Drive Interface is available as a compact panel (SDI S220) directly on the CU320-3 or as a remote version (SDI Pro with larger display and web server). An optional Smart WiFi adapter enables flexible remote access.
Flexibility and scalability
The Sinamics S220 drive system offers a wide range of performance for industrial applications. Air-cooled motor modules in book-size and chassis designs with a voltage range of 3AC 380 - 480 V are available for market launch. The rated current ranges from 3 A (1.1 kW) to 1,518 A (900 kW) and can be expanded to up to 6,984 kW by connecting eight modules in parallel. Active Infeeds with energy recovery are available for power supply in the range from 210 kW to 921 kW, which can also be scaled by connecting multiple units in parallel. In addition, air-cooled universal modules are being introduced that can be flexibly operated as motor modules or active line modules. Six devices cover the entire function and performance range in the event of a spare part replacement and enable quick adaptation to changing requirements.
Safety Integrated and cybersecurity at the highest level
The Sinamics S220 with software version 6.6 sets new standards in plant safety. The new safety architecture reduces the safety cycle from 12 ms to four ms, enabling faster responses and higher productivity. Automatic background tests ensure uninterrupted operation, while the offline parameterizable safety functions significantly simplify engineering. The drive is SIL 3-certified for all operating states and offers corresponding safety in critical applications. The Sinamics S220 was developed as part of a validated development process in accordance with the IEC 62443-4-1 standard – independently certified by TÜV SÜD. The drive system has numerous integrated safety functions, including user and access control, encrypted drive data, and integrity and authentication checks for firmware and configuration data. Together with other measures in the machine, these functions increase resilience to cybersecurity risks.
Sustainable drive system for the industry of the future
With the Sinamics S220, Siemens presents a drive system that combines sustainability and performance. The compact design saves space, while resource-saving materials and high reparability and recyclability contribute to environmental friendliness. Industrial edge applications enable the recording and visualization of energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. The ISO 14021-certified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) documents environmental performance over the entire life cycle and underscores Siemens' commitment to sustainable industrial solutions.
