Kendrion develops PM brake kit

With the new Slim PM and High Torque Line, Kendrion offers motor manufacturers a modular logic that covers all torque ranges with the same technology concept.

The market for servo motors is growing steadily, driven by automation, robotics, and mechanical engineering. Solutions in the low- and mid-torque range, which accounts for around 70 percent of all applications, are in particularly high demand. The focus here is on compact, cost-efficient, and powerful components. Brakes play a central role in this: around one-third of all servo drives are delivered with brakes to ensure safety and stability in dynamic movements.

Kendrion is addressing precisely this high-volume segment with its new Slim PM series. The permanent magnet brakes complement the manufacturer's existing High Torque Line – both series use identical mechanical and electrical interfaces. This provides motor manufacturers with a modular system that covers different torque ranges with a common brake technology.

“The goal was to create a permanent magnet brake that could be integrated into existing motor architectures without any modifications,” explains Waldemar Schaermann, Product Manager at Kendrion. “Slim PM and High Torque Line work as a single unit. This greatly simplifies project planning and assembly for OEMs.”

The Slim PM has been consistently designed for high power density and economical production. It is lighter and more cost-effective than conventional models, without any technical compromises. However, the biggest advantage lies in standardization: assembly processes, dynamic behavior in the motor, and documentation remain identical—regardless of whether the Slim PM or the High Torque Line is used. This reduces effort and sources of error and enables greater automation in production.

“Two brakes, one system – that's our principle,” summarizes Waldemar Schaermann. “Our consistent modular system creates flexibility and reduces costs.”
