Demands on drive systems in railway technology are exceptionally high. There is a need for powerful, durable, and compact solutions that function reliably even under extreme conditions. Groschopp AG – Drives and More offers customized electric drive systems suitable for use in both energy infrastructure and rail vehicles.

The shift toward sustainable transport, the global focus on carbon neutrality, and government funding programs are currently driving significant investment in the expansion of rail infrastructure and modern rolling stock. Groschopp develops robust, long-lasting drive solutions that operate reliably in demanding environments and cover a wide range of applications: they are used, for instance, in high- and medium-voltage switches and disconnectors within railway power grids, as well as in electric point machines. Groschopp’s expertise in general power distribution proves advantageous here. The manufacturer’s motors, gearboxes, and controllers also offer diverse options for rail vehicles—including electric door systems, retractable steps, wheelchair lifts, actuators for HVAC systems, and windshield wiper systems for train units.

High demands on drive technology

"In the railway sector, drive systems are required to deliver peak performance under the harshest environmental conditions," explains André Coolen-Pearse, Head of Marketing and Sales at Groschopp. "They must withstand extreme temperature fluctuations, moisture, dirt, and dust, and—depending on the application—meet protection ratings of up to IP65/IP67." Added to this are high levels of vibration and shock during operation, fluctuating onboard voltages, and the need to comply with strict EMC guidelines. Compliance with relevant railway standards—such as EN 50155 for electronic equipment on rolling stock or EN 45545 for fire protection—must also be demonstrable through appropriate certifications.

Groschopp’s electric motors are characterized by their long service life and reliability, as well as extended maintenance intervals (MTBF). This is a major advantage in railway engineering, where prolonged downtime can result in high costs. Furthermore, the manufacturer’s compact motor-gearbox designs allow for installation in confined spaces—such as within train wall panels for door systems or inside compact control cabinets.

Customized, all-in-one systems from a single source

"We do not simply supply off-the-shelf catalog products; instead, we adapt our PGK series DC motors, KE or KG series universal motors, and compact brushless servo motors to the industry's specific requirements through railway-specific customization," adds Coolen-Pearse. "This includes features such as specialized motor windings for railway power supplies, flanges, robust sealing systems and bearings, railway-compliant connectors, specific paint finishes, and insulation classes tailored to customer specifications." The company also supplies its motors combined with gearboxes and controllers as modular, custom-tailored, all-in-one solutions from a single source.
