More Functional Safety
Kollmorgen, a global provider of automation and motion systems, today announced the latest update to its SafeMotion Monitor (SMM) firmware.
The SMM2.0 upgrade enables OEMs to leverage SMM's functional safety capabilities with more encoder and motor types to support a wider range of applications, such as multi-axis measurement systems or applications in the material forming and food industries.
As standard for the 2G Motion System, SMM2.0 is compatible with all motors equipped with a Hiperface DSL non-rotating feedback system. This includes the AKM2G and AKMA motor ranges, which now offer a wider choice of feedback systems. SMM2.0 also enables a second instance of Safe Operation Stop (SOS) for greater design flexibility.
Following the adoption of the updated EU functional safety regulations, customers worldwide and across a variety of industries are looking for upgrades to meet the new standards. SMM2.0 simplifies compliance with a comprehensive set of 16 safety functions, including SafePosition, SafeStop and SafeSpeed.
"As the demand for functional safety increases, we want to make it easier for our customers to integrate these functions into their machine designs," explains Christopher Cooper, Senior Director Product Management at Kollmorgen. "SMM2.0 enables simple, drive-resident functional safety for a wider range of motors and demanding applications, making it the ideal answer to this need."
