Evaluate investments in cobots and mobile robots quickly and easily. SMEs in particular benefit from simple and affordable leasing options.

Is the purchase of a collaborative or mobile robot worth it? Answers are now provided by Omron's new return-on-investment (ROI) calculator . This tool provides companies considering the purchase of a cobot or mobile robot with a quick and easy overview of return on investment based on actual data. This allows them to estimate the number of months until an investment will break even. Inflation and interest rate adjustments are taken into account according to market conditions.

Mobile robots and cobots are quick to deploy and easy to transport. This makes them a good option for companies that want to make their production processes more flexible and efficient. At the same time, such robots can also strengthen the safety of the work environment: they work alongside their human colleagues and help handle or transport goods and materials.

However, many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot afford the initial investment for these technologies. OMRON therefore offers manufacturers looking to expand their fleets of mobile or collaborative robots simple leasing options that keep initial investment costs low.

Eduardo de Robbio, Strategic Business Development Manager at Omron, comments, "We have noticed during the pandemic that high-mix low-volume production, but at the same time, the shortage of skilled workers is increasing immensely. This has led to more vacancies for human operators and more work for robots. So in addition to flexible leasing options, we want to give our customers an easy-to-use ROI calculator to help make decisions."

Here's how the ROI calculator works: first, the user provides information on current tasks, robot type and number of devices. Then, the calculator provides a clear overview of the payback period, ROI percentage, and net present value, which is the estimated current total value of future cash flows.

A key question from customers is always how to finance a new investment. Omron's ROI calculator shows two typical options: the traditional capex option, with full payment at the outset, and an opex option with leasing, where payments are split over three to five years.

De Robbio sums up, "Robots can do a wonderful job of performing repetitive tasks and ensuring flexible, accurate and efficient operation, leaving human colleagues to focus on business-critical and creative tasks. As for the fundamental aspect of profitability, human labor is being used for more value-added tasks. This will become absolutely essential for manufacturers in the future. In addition, automation helps offset the shortage of skilled workers in the labor market."
