Power supply and data communication combined
Parker Hannifin introduces the latest generation of its proven DFplus valves with an IO-Link Class B interface, expanding its existing IO-Link Class A offering. The newly introduced version combines power supply and data communication in a single M12 connector, enabling high dynamic performance, comprehensive diagnostics, and simplified wiring for demanding hydraulic applications.
DFplus valves have proven successful in the market for several generations and are now available in their fourth generation with IO-Link Class A as a standard communication interface alongside the analog interface. This IO-Link interface allows users to adjust valve parameters and read status data during operation. Thanks to the galvanic isolation between the operating voltage supply and the IO-Link power supply, access to the valve electronics parameters is possible even when the operating voltage is switched off, thus supporting efficient setup and service routines.
Building on this platform, Parker has continuously developed the concept into a new version of IO-Link Class B, which is now available for DFplus valves. IO-Link Class B is an IO-Link connector type that, in addition to the standard IO-Link communication lines, provides an extra, galvanically isolated power supply for the power output stage. With Class B IO-Link, the complex and costly 6+PE or 11+PE connections are eliminated. These are replaced by a standardized, pre-assembled M12 cable. Frank Henschke, Product Manager at Hydraulic Valve Systems Division Europe, explains the advantage: “Switching to a pre-assembled M12 connector significantly reduces the risk of malfunctions, which are often caused by plug-in connectors.”
In the DFplus version with Class B IO-Link, the data connection and power supply are combined in a single 5-pin M12 connector. This configuration allows the valve to be supplied with currents of up to 4 A, thus fully maintaining the renowned dynamic performance of the DFplus valve family. To achieve this performance, suitable IO-Link masters and M12 cables are required. The supply voltage, digital setpoint transmission, digital feedback, and all activation/deactivation functions are handled via this single M12 interface using IO-Link, significantly reducing wiring complexity and installation effort.
In addition to performance and wiring advantages, DFplus valves with IO-Link Class B offer comprehensive diagnostic and service functions. Users can access detailed diagnostic data such as temperature, cycle count, and fault conditions, and configure parameters directly via the PLC or service tools. This capability enables faster commissioning, facilitates condition-based and predictive maintenance strategies, and contributes to higher system availability.
Furthermore, DFplus valves with IO-Link Class B can be used as shut-off elements up to Category 3, PL d according to EN 13849-1. Safety via IO-Link is achieved through galvanic isolation between the power unit and the control electronics when used with suitable IO-Link masters. This results in functional safety and high operational reliability in modern hydraulic systems.
DFplus valves with an IO-Link Class B interface are now available in selected sizes and configurations; further versions will follow.
