Surgical robots present unique challenges for drive technology. Movements must be highly precise, exactly reproducible, and simultaneously safe, especially in close proximity to the patient. Due to the extremely limited space available, compact, lightweight, and high-performance wave gears are particularly well-suited for this application. Nabtesco combines robotics expertise, medical technology experience, and gear expertise to create space-saving drive solutions that optimally meet the industry's stringent precision and safety requirements – from ultra-short gear units and digital gearboxes to complete actuators.
Precisely Executed Movements for Accurate Surgery
Nabtesco wave gears are characterized by zero backlash, excellent repeatability, and high torque capacity, ensuring instantaneous, millimeter-accurate transmission of control movements to instruments and axes. The adjustable return torque allows for controlled yielding and supports sensitive positioning. Thanks to their small dimensions and low weight, multi-axis robot structures can be implemented in a very space-saving manner. Enclosed designs contribute to easy cleaning and a hygienic environment.
Short Gears with 120% Torque and 140% Service Life
Short gears are particularly interesting for surgical robotics: Compared to conventional short wave gears, they achieve 120% torque and 140% service life in the same size. This creates additional freedom for the development of compact and powerful robotic systems. Versions with a hollow shaft allow cables, hoses, and power supplies to be routed directly through the gear.
Compact actuators simplify system integration
When a high degree of integration is required, complete actuators offer decisive advantages. They combine gearbox, motor, encoder, and an optional brake in a single, coordinated unit, ensuring high functionality, ease of use, and maximum compactness. This reduces interface complexity and simplifies integration into complex robotic systems.
High overload protection and digital gearbox solutions
For emergency stop situations, the wave gearboxes are designed for torques of up to 500% of the rated torque, with a safety factor against failure of up to 1,500%. In the event of a malfunction, this contributes to the protection of patients and operating personnel. The digital gearbox provides additional safety through the precise detection of torque changes, enabling early collision detection and rapid stopping of movements.
Wave gearboxes made in Germany
All wave gearboxes are developed and manufactured in Limburg an der Lahn (Ovalo GmbH site) and meet high quality and process requirements. Before delivery, each gearbox undergoes a 100% final inspection.
