GWJ Technology GmbH, the calculation specialist from Braunschweig, Germany, is expanding its web-based calculation software eAssistant and the TBK gear software with an additional CAD functionality that supports the export of gears in 3D STEP or IGES format directly from the calculation.
The new function makes it possible to generate the geometry of various types of gearing as a 3D CAD model in STEP and IGES format. This means that there is now also an alternative to the intelligent 3D CAD plug-ins for CAD systems such as Solidworks, Autodesk Inventor, Solid Edge or Siemens NX, which have been available for a long time.
Both the STEP and IGES formats are standardised exchange formats for 3D models and can be imported into almost any CAD system. In the settings menu for STEP and IGES output, the user can choose from various functions to customise the export. The geometry can be created as a solid model with one or all teeth or as a surface model of the tooth space geometry. When exporting, the user can also set the degree of accuracy to a desired value.
At present, the following calculation modules include the new STEP/IGES export: single gear (external) and single gear (internal) for geometry calculation of individual spur and helical gears, cylindrical gear pairs, planetary stages, 3 and 4 gear chains, spur and helical bevel gears, spiral bevel gears as well as toothed shaft connections (DIN 5480 etc.). Alternatively, the output of involute tooth forms in 2D DXF with various setting options is also possible. Here, both the tooth form geometry in the face cut and in the normal cut are supported.
