Higher resolution opens up new areas of application

Posital has comprehensively updated its Ixarc family of incremental magnetic encoders, increasing the maximum resolution to 32,768 pulses per revolution (PPR). The upgrade includes new phasing options that offer a choice of wider index pulses (Z). This makes it easier to replicate the properties of older encoders - a key criterion for maintenance engineers or the MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Operations) sector.

The higher resolution is made possible largely by the introduction of the advanced TMR (Tunnel Magneto Resistance) sensor technology. Power consumption has also been reduced, another important aspect for users in both the MRO and OEM segments.

"Magnetic encoders have tangible advantages over their optical counterparts. They are more compact, robust and resistant to damp and dirty environments," emphasizes Jörg Paulus, European head of the sensor manufacturer Posital. "While optical encoders have traditionally been the first choice for high-resolution applications, our new, high-performance magnetic Ixarc encoders have rapidly narrowed the performance gap, making them ideal for high-speed commercial printers and many other demanding applications."

Incremental encoders in the magnetic Ixarc family are precisely programmable. Resolution (from 1 to 32,768 PPR), pulse direction (A before B or B before A), index pulse width and output driver (HTL or TTL) are individually controlled via software parameters. Customers can either order the configurations they require preset from the factory or quickly and safely adapt their encoders on site using the convenient Ubifast programming tool offered by Posital.

Incremental Ixarc encoders are available in many mechanical configurations. Customers can specify and select housing materials, mounting flanges (compatible with European, North American and Asian standards), shaft configurations, connector types and protection classes (up to IP69K). 316L stainless steel housings are available for food and beverage applications. They are designed to withstand shock loads of up to 300g and can be ordered with heavy-duty bearings (shaft loads of up to 180N) if required, making them ideal for harsh environments such as mining, off-road or offshore applications.

With their extensive and highly flexible range of functions, features and options, Ixarc encoders can be easily integrated into existing motion control systems - whether for new projects or replacing older equipment. Posital's intuitive online product finder helps buyers select the right option for every application.
