Coloring book sparks children's curiosity about industrial engines
Menzel Elektromotoren has published what is likely the world’s first coloring book about the manufacture of industrial motors. In it, children playfully discover how large motors are made and develop an early enthusiasm for technology and careers in electrical engineering.
Menzel Elektromotoren is promoting the appeal of careers in electrical engineering even among the youngest children. The medium-sized company from Hennigsdorf near Berlin has taken an original approach to this and is the first industrial manufacturer to publish a coloring book about its work. Children in preschool and elementary school learn in a playful way how large industrial motors are made. “The coloring book is meant to bring joy to children and, at the same time, spark their curiosity about technology,” says Anja Leipold, head of marketing at Menzel. “We’re already partnering with schools in our region to provide information about electrical machine engineering and attract young people to apprenticeships. Our industry is extremely important for all sectors of industry and the economy. We can’t start nurturing the next generation early enough. Who else but a motor manufacturer should explain how electric motors are built, tested, maintained, and repaired?”
The coloring book showcases a diverse range of activities at the intersection of skilled trades, electrical engineering, mechanics, and industry. All drawings are based on photos from the Hennigsdorf motor plant. They show in great detail how large motors are built.
Menzel takes the promotion of young talent seriously. The third-generation family-run company, which will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2027, trains young people annually to become electronics technicians specializing in machinery and drive technology. Those who start at Menzel usually stay for a long time. Family members often follow in their footsteps and join the company—arguably the best seal of approval for an employer.
