Omron Europe BV's Research and Development (R&D) department has now received IEC 62443-4-1 certification for the Product Security Development Lifecycle. This certification, awarded by the globally recognized TÜV Rheinland, is another important milestone in Omron's commitment to increasing cybersecurity in the field of industrial automation. TÜV Rheinland is an international, independent testing service provider based in Cologne.

Following the certification of Omron's Controller division in Japan last year, this success of the European R&D department underlines the company's commitment to ensuring safe and reliable product development processes worldwide.

The IEC 62443-4-1 certification is part of the IEC 62443 series of standards that focus on the secure development of industrial automation and control systems. It addresses all aspects of a development cycle, from defining safety requirements through design and implementation to verification, validation, management and end-of-life processes of the product. The certification underlines that Omron can always support customers and partners in developing innovative and reliable products that meet strict security standards and overcome current and future security challenges.

Wendy Tonks, senior test engineer and R&D cybersecurity specialist at Omron Europe, comments: "The support from Decoy Technologies undoubtedly contributed to us achieving IEC 62443-4-1 certification. Their advice and suggestions for improvement ensured that the audit went smoothly and also meant that we were able to achieve our desired level of maturity with minimal rework and few queries."

There are currently two key pieces of legislation in the European Union that are intended to promote cybersecurity. The Cyber ​​Resilience Act (CRA), a legislative proposal from the European Union, applies to digital products and is intended to ensure that they remain secure throughout their lifecycle. The NIS2 (Network and Information Security Directive 2) is a European Union directive to improve cybersecurity capabilities in the EU. It sets stricter standards for critical sectors and is intended to ensure that companies are better prepared for cyber threats.

Tonks concludes: “Developing secure products is essential for us and with this certification and ongoing preparations for NIS2 and the Cyber ​​Resilience Act, customers can rely on our efforts to improve cybersecurity. We have seen growing interest and requests from our customers in this regard, so we invite our partners in the mechanical engineering industry to discuss CRA-related topics.”
