Linear motors

Powerful, versatile, easy to use

Powerful, versatile, easy to use

Kollmorgen introduces the latest addition to its IC Ironcore DDL motor family, which now supports 400/480 VAC powered applications in addition to 230 VAC products.

Kollmorgen's new linear direct-drive motor offers a continuous force of up to 8,211 N and a peak force of up to 13,448 N. Operating at higher bus voltages, the motor can also deliver its rated force at higher speeds. This makes it ideal for applications such as machine tools, semiconductor manufacturing, battery production, and industrial automation where heavy loads must be moved quickly and precisely.

Lighter and more compact machines

In applications with a 400 or 480 VAC bus voltage, the IC Ironcore DDL can eliminate the need for a transformer, which would otherwise be required to operate a lower-voltage motor. Furthermore, a motor operating at a higher voltage can deliver a given power output with a lower current. The lower current draw in a higher-voltage application enables the use of a smaller drive amplifier and a cable harness with a smaller cross-section.

Smaller drives, lighter cables, and the elimination of transformers allow machine builders to use smaller control cabinets with lower cooling requirements. In addition, the IC Ironcore DDL motor also offers a water-cooling option that increases continuous power output by up to 40% to 60%, allowing for the specification of a smaller motor. All of these advantages contribute to a lighter, more compact, and more sustainable machine design that is easier and more cost-effective to build, providing added value to both OEMs and their customers.

Versatile solutions for customers worldwide

Another advantage of the IC Ironcore DDL motor is that it allows OEMs to serve global markets without having to significantly adapt their machines for each region. The 240/400/480 VAC bus voltage meets the needs of most customers in North America, Europe, and Asia. The motor is UL and CE certified, as well as RoHS and REACH compliant, simplifying the approval process for selling machines in any target market worldwide. The IC Ironcore DDL motor complements Kollmorgen's broad range of linear direct-drive motors, which also includes the ICD Ironcore Low Profile DDL and the IL Ironless DDL. When combined with the AKD or AKD2G servo drives, these motors offer the highest precision, smoothness, and reliability for demanding applications. The AKD2G dual-axis servo drives can also synchronize two motors—for example, in an X/Y table application—thus saving even more space in the control cabinet.

"With the high-voltage IC Ironcore DDL, we are not only expanding our size and power range, but also increasing the versatility of our motor portfolio," explains Chris Cooper, Senior Director of Product Management at Kollmorgen. "Our latest Kollmorgen product enables machine builders to achieve a whole new level of linear motion performance to differentiate their designs in an increasingly competitive global marketplace."
