From dialysis to dosing

From dialysis to dosing

Configurable BLDC motor solutions like those from Dunkermotoren help pump manufacturers improve precision, energy efficiency, connectivity and long-term reliability across medical, industrial, hydraulic, and process applications

Whether it’s a dialysis machine, a dosing pump, a cooling circuit, or a hydraulic power unit: Today’s modern pump systems must do much more than simply move fluids. They must offer precise controllability, maximum energy efficiency, low noise levels, a long service life, and seamless integration into digital systems. At the same time, the demand for compact designs and short development times is increasing. Dunkermotoren addresses these challenges with configurable BLDC drive solutions that can be specifically tailored to the requirements of various pump applications.

Rather than viewing the motor as a standalone component, Dunkermotoren takes a holistic systems approach. The motor, power electronics, feedback systems, communication interfaces, and application-specific engineering are combined into an integrated drive solution. This results in a modular drive platform that can be flexibly adapted to load profiles, operating conditions, and the specific requirements of the pump application.

This approach offers decisive advantages for pump manufacturers. The number of individual components and interfaces is reduced, development processes are simplified, and integration efforts are minimized. At the same time, the necessary flexibility is maintained to implement different pump concepts cost-effectively.

“The performance of modern pump systems today depends on far more than just selecting the right motor,” explains Michael Burgert, Product Manager at Dunkermotoren. “Manufacturers are increasingly benefiting from modular drive solutions that combine motor technology, intelligence, connectivity, and application expertise into a single platform. This simplifies integration while delivering the precision, efficiency, and reliability that demanding applications require.”

Different Requirements, One Scalable Solution

In medical technology, for example, dialysis machines or infusion systems must deliver fluids precisely and reliably over long periods of time. Precisely controlled BLDC drives ensure reproducible flow rates and, thanks to their quiet operation, contribute to a comfortable environment for patients and medical staff. As modern medical devices become increasingly compact, space-saving motor solutions with integrated electronics also play an important role.

Hydraulic applications present entirely different conditions. Pumps in rail vehicles, mobile machinery, or industrial plants often operate under varying loads and must reliably withstand vibrations, temperature fluctuations, and frequent start-stop cycles. Here, the closed-loop control of BLDC drives enables pressure generation tailored to demand and helps machine designers achieve an optimal balance between dynamic performance and energy consumption.

Intelligent drive control is also becoming increasingly important in cooling circuits, HVAC systems, and process circulation systems. Instead of operating continuously at maximum power, variable-speed BLDC motors continuously adjust the flow rate to actual demand. This reduces energy consumption while simultaneously ensuring stable temperature control and reliable process operation.

In dosing and metering pumps for water treatment, chemical processing, laboratory applications, or automated filling processes, repeatability is particularly crucial. Precisely controlled drives ensure that defined liquid volumes are dispensed consistently and reliably, even under changing operating conditions.

Why BLDC Technology Is Gaining Ground

Regardless of the application, manufacturers benefit from the fundamental characteristics of BLDC technology. Electronic commutation enables precise speed and torque control, thereby laying the foundation for stable flow rates, precise pressure control, and high dosing accuracy. Since mechanical brushes are not used, wear and maintenance requirements are significantly reduced. At the same time, the motors operate quietly, are energy-efficient, and generate little heat. This has a positive impact on operating costs and increases reliability, particularly in applications with long runtime periods or continuous operation.

Modular Drive Platforms for Scalable Automation

With the intelligent motor control platforms dGo, dMove, and dPro, Dunkermotoren also offers scalable solutions for a variety of automation and networking requirements. While dGo provides a cost-effective solution for basic speed control tasks, dMove expands the capabilities to include CANopen communication and access to key operating data. For highly automated production environments, dPro provides a platform that supports industrial communication standards such as PROFINET, EtherCAT, and EtherNet/IP and offers comprehensive diagnostic and condition monitoring functions. This enables the implementation of modern predictive maintenance concepts as well as integration into industrial IoT architectures.

Engineering Expertise from Concept to Series Production

Since no two pump applications are alike, Dunkermotoren supports its customers beyond mere product selection with comprehensive engineering support. Already in the early project phases, the development teams analyze requirements such as torque, speed profiles, thermal behavior, environmental conditions, and installation space constraints. Based on this, drive solutions are developed that are optimally tailored to the overall system.

Depending on the application, the possibilities range from custom shaft and mounting solutions to special motor dimensions and integrated electronics, as well as customized communication interfaces, individual control functions, and gear solutions. This collaborative development approach shortens development times, simplifies integration, and supports reliable series production throughout the entire product lifecycle.

Intelligent Drive Solutions for the Pumps of Tomorrow

With the trend toward smart, energy-efficient, and increasingly connected pump systems, drive technology is becoming a critical success factor. By combining BLDC motor technology, smart control platforms, communication interfaces, feedback systems, and application-specific engineering, Dunkermotoren offers a scalable drive architecture that can be flexibly adapted to a wide variety of pump applications. The result is a unified platform that makes it easier for manufacturers to develop innovative pump systems, simplifies integration, and accelerates the path to market.
